Literally thousands of pages, constantly updated and expanded to give you the greatest single resource for the study of Traditional Medicine ever envisaged. What About Animal Medicines?
MedicineTraditions does not support the use of endangered animals in modern Traditional Medicine.
MedicineTraditions does not support animal cruelty for Traditional Medicine or modern medical research. Many Traditional animal medicines are by-products of animals that do not require their slaughter. In addition, many animal medicines are obtained from animals already farmed for human consumption. A number of animal medicines are derived from insects which can be farmed ethically to supply Traditional Medicine. The farming of insects is expected to rise dramatically for both medicine and food in the coming decades. The most controversial Animal medicines such as Rhino horn, Tiger bone and Bear Bile all have ethical substitutes that are widely used in modern Traditional Medicine. In addition, various vegetable substitutes can be used in place of animal medicines in traditional formula. Is Traditional Medicine Effective?
Traditional Medicine has its roots in prehistoric times. Over millennia, certain herbs and formulas developed reputations for their efficacy in treating certain conditions. Many of the indications modern herbalists are taught today are uses known to ancient Greek, Indian or Chinese practitioners 1000 or 2000 years ago.
There is a huge amount of pharmacological research into traditional medicines and it is impressive how often modern research confirms traditional usage. In addition, in China, India, the Middle East, and even in Western Countries, traditional medicines are studied in animals or clinical trials to ascertain efficacy. It is not uncommon for traditional medicines to be found similar in efficacy to modern western control drugs. Of course, a lot of traditional use is unproven and some traditional theories are now known to be incorrect. However, the long and continuing history of traditional medicine, along with its growing use in the west means that Traditional Medicine is here to stay. Therefore, MedicineTraditions is providing this valuable resource to bring Traditional Medicine into the 21st century and beyond. See our article How Do We Know Traditional Medicine Works? Can I get treatment?
MedicineTraditions is not for self-diagnosis or self treatment.
We do not offer consultations or give diagnosis, treatment, recommendations or medicines for self-treatment. If you need medical assistance please contact your Traditional Medicine practitioner or other healthcare professional. Who Created MedicineTraditions?
MedicineTraditions has been created by Adam Tate.
Adam studied TCM with Professor Wong Lun at the Academy of TCM in Melbourne between 1990–94. He has made an in-depth study of the Western Tradition, along with Ayurveda and Tibetan Medicine. He has traveled far and wide in his study of Traditional Medicine while maintaining a clinical practice for over 20 years. Adam found that most of the underlying philosophy in the different systems is ultimately very similar and that information has been shared along the Silk Road for over 2500 years. MedicineTraditions was created to promote and teach Traditional Medicine, to find the common threads between the systems, and and to elevate Herbal Medicine in the West to its former glory. MedicineTraditions now has a small support staff and input from other practitioners and teachers of Traditional Medicine. How is MedicineTraditions Funded?
