白芍药 (White Peony)

Amount
9 grams
6 grams



9 grams ea.


Preparation:
Decoction; the source text says to boil in 8 cups of water down to 3 cups. Today, Aconite is boiled for 45–60 minutes before adding the other ingredients.

Function:
Warms the Yang, clears Damp, promotes Urine

Use:
Abdominal pain, urinary difficulty, heavy and aching extremities, maybe with edema, loose stool, dizziness, swollen tongue with a white smooth coat and a weak, deep pulse.

1. Edema
2. Ascites
3. Chronic Nephritis
4. Chronic Diarrhea
5. Rheumatoid Arthritis
6. Primary Hypertension
7. Hypothyroidism
8. Palpitations
9. Congestive Heart failure


Dose:

1 cup is taken 3 times daily

Cautions:
1. Not used in cases of marked Heat or Yin deficiency.

Modifications:
1. More severe Yang deficiency, or for Chronic Bronchitis, add dry Ginger
2. Palpitations from Qi de
ficiency, add Ginseng
3. Wheezing or Coughing with excess watery sputum, add Schisandra
Wu Wei Zi.
4. Cold-Damp Leukorrhea or Rheumatoid Arthritis, add Cinnamon twig
Gui Zhi and
Codonopsis Dang Shen.
