Preparation:
Powder
Also prepared as a decoction with 3–4 times the dose, cooking for only 20 minutes
Function:
Clears Damp, Promotes Urine, Strengthens the Spleen and Warms the Yang
Use:
There are 3 patterns this formula may be used for.
I. Edema, heaviness, diarrhea, urinary difficulty or scanty urine
II. Headache, Fever, Urinary difficulty, thirst, with a floating pulse
III. Palpitations below Umbilicus, vomiting of frothy saliva, vertigo, shortness of breath, difficult urination
1. Edema and Fluid Retention
2. Obesity
3. Acute or Chronic Nephritis
4. Ascites
5. Renal Failure
6. Congestive Heart Failure
7. Cardiac Edema
8. Hypertension associated with excess Fluid
9. Menieres Disease
10. Otitis media
10. Neurogenic Bladder syndrome
11. Hypertension or Edema during Pregnancy
Dose:
3–6 grams, 2–3 times dialy with warm water. Traditionally taken with a little wine.
Cautions:
None noted
Modifications:
1. Edema from Spleen deficiency, add Codonopisis Dang Shen
2. Severe Edema, add Mulberry bark (Sang Bai Pi), Citrus Chen Pi
3. Edema due to Yang deficiency, add Cinnamon (Rou Gui) and prepared Aconitum Fu Zi
4. Ascites take with Li Zhong Wan
5. Ascites from Yang deficiency, add Codonopsis Dang Shen, Cinnamon (Rou Gui), Aconitum Fu Zi
6. Renal Failure, add Rhubarb (Da Huang) and prepared Aconitum Fu Zi
7. Jaundice, add Artemisia Yin Chen Hao and Gardenia Zhi Zi
8. Menieres Disease, add Astragalus Huang Qi, Atractylodes Bai Zhu, Calamus (Shi Chang Pu)
9. Otitis media, add Calamus (Shi Chang Pu), Asarum Xi Xin
10. Coronary Heart Disease, add Salvia Dan Shen, Safflower (Hong Hua)
11. Gestational Hypertention, add Mistletoe (Sang Ji Sheng), Amomum Sha Ren, Chaenomelas Mu Gua
