Preparation:
Dissolve the gums in wine which has had Mugwort boiled in it, then add the rest and form Troches. Some used the thickened juice of Mugwort.
Function:
Moves the Blood, promotes Menstruation, eases Pain
Use:
1. Amenorrhea from obstruction
2. Dysmenorrhea, Uterine Pain
3. May be useful for Uterine growths such as Fibroids, as well as Endometriosis and related disorders
4. It was given to clear the Afterbirth, or to remove a Dead Fetus.
5. It was also recommended by some for Palpitations, weak Limbs, spasms and contractions of the Muscles, Paralysis and Rheumatism when associated with Blood stagnation.
Dose:
1 scruple–1 dram, 1 scruple doses being given to young girls with primary Amenorrhea; it is taken with wine or some suitable vehicle such as decoction of Mugwort, Juniper or Peppermint.
Cautions:
1. Not used during Pregnancy
Modifications:
1. A version listed by Wirtzung used Elecampane in place of Asafetida
2. Another version used 2 drams each of Rue, Pennyroyal, Lovage, Dittany, Valerian, Asafetida, Gum Ammoniac and Sagapen in place of the group listed above for which 2 drams is prescribed.
3. In Amenorrhea, Celery seed and Cinnamon may be added.
4. To promote Labor and cleanse the Afterbirth, add Cinnamon, Saffron and Borax
5. To more strongly relieve pain, add a little Musk
6. They were made into Suppositories with mucilage of Tradacanth
To promote Menstruation and relieve Menstrual pain, nothing was said to be more commended than Troches of Myrrh.
