Preparation:
Decoct the Gypsum for 45 minutes before adding the other ingredients.
Function:
Opens the Lungs, moves Lung Qi, clears Heat, stops Cough and Wheezing
Use:
Fever (with or without sweating), thirst, cough, wheezing, yellow tongue coat, with a rapid pulse
1. Upper Respiratory Tract Infection
2. Bronchial Asthma
3. Pneumonia (lobar or bronchial
4. Bronchiolitis
5. Whooping Cough
6. Diphtheria
Dose:
The above is taken over the course of the day in 3 equal doses.
Cautions:
Not used for Wheezing from Cold or Deficiency
Modifications:
1. When Apricot kernels are omitted and Fresh Ginger and Chinese Red Dates Da Zao are added it is called Yue Bi Tang (Maidservant from Yue Decoction). Used for Wind- edema, a generalised Edema beginning in the face with slight Fever, aversion to drafts, continuous sweating and a floating (superficial) pulse. Doses are Ma Huang 9 grams, fresh Ginger 9 grams, Gypsum 18 grams, Red Dates 5 pieces and Licorice 5 grams. Used for acute Nephritis, Edema due to Nephritis, Hydrocele and has been used for Rheumatoid Arthritis.
2. When Atracylodes Bai Zhu is added to the above, it forms Maidservant from Yue Decoction plus Atracylodes. It is used for the same purpose but with more severe deficiency.
