Preparation:
Powder and with Honey clarified with white wine, 6 oz., form an Electuary
Function:
Clears Wind, Cold and Damp, relieves Pain
Use:
1. Arthritic and Rheumatic complaints;
2. loss of lower limb Mobility, inability to walk.
Dose:
1–2 scruples
Cautions:
None noted
Modifications:
1. A related formula of Alexander added Pepper and Aniseed, but omitted Clove and Elecampane.
2. If this were recreated today, all herbs could be used in equal proportions to lessen the harsh effects of Colchicum and Scammony. The Sweet Colchicum of Unani can be used which is less toxic. Rhubarb or Aloe could replace Scammony.
Several authors, including Willis, said the use of Caryocosticum would make those who could not walk around be able to walk.
