Tinctura Salviae
Tincture of Sage,
Or, Tincture for the Head

Salt of Tartar

Salvia spp.
Potassium carbonate
Amount
4 oz.
2 oz.

Preparation:
Grind them to powder in a hot mortar, then put them in a vessel and cover with 2 lbs. of Tartarised S.V., Spirit of Sage, or Tincture of Salt of Tartar (or Brandy). Mix, seal, and digest for 15–30 days, then decant the clear liquid for use.

Function:
Settles Wind, Clears Damp, Moves the Blood

Use:
1. Vertigo
2. Sleepiness, Lethargy
3. Apoplexy
4. Paralysis
5. Epilepsy
6. Cramps
7. Melancholy
8. Infertility
9. Cough, Cold, Catarrh
10. Topically for Arthritis, Sciatica
11. Applied to the lower abdomen after childbirth to ease afterpains

10–20 drops

The Tincture for the Head is a great Cephalic, being used for various diseases of the Head, Brain and Nerves which come from Cold and Moisture, such as "Lethargy, Sleepiness, Dullness, Heaviness, Vertigo, Epilepsy, Palsy, Convulsions, Cramps, Melancholy, and the Gout".

It is also used for diseases of the Stomach and Lungs including Cough, Colds, Catarrhs, and "Stoppages in the Head".

"It resists Poison, and is of good use against all Putrid, Malign, and Pestilential Fevers".

"It comforts a cold and moist Womb, and is said to remove the cause of Barrenness in Women". It is taken internally as well as being applied externally during Labor to ease the pains.

Externally it is bathed upon pains that come from a cold and moist cause, Arthritis, Sciatica, and to discuss Tumors and clear inflammations. It also prevents Gangrene, and treats Contusions. (Bates, Salmon)
