The Tincture of Honey

  Best Honey                                  2 lbs.
  Spirit of Wine                               2 lbs.
Fine, white, dry sand                  3 lbs.

Digest in a warm place in a sealed bottle; strain, and evaporate in B.M. to the thickness of Honey.
Some used ‘Spirit of Wine twice rectified from Carminatives’, meaning Brandy distilled from carminative herbs which will carry their virtues across with the menstruum.
Dose: 2–3 spoonfuls, usually taken in some suitable Pectoral Decoction etc.

The Tincture of Honey, is very nourishing and strengthening, increases Qi, and tonifies the Yin. It supplies very good nourishment in weakened and wasting bodies and is especially useful for the Aged.
This was ‘accounted by authors as the highest remedy against an Asthma, Phthisic [Consumption], and an inveterate Cough’; also for shortness of breath.
It was recommended by many as a valuable treatment in Hectic Fever and Consumption, being given twice daily: ‘Beguinus prescribes it rather to the true Hectical, or such as are in deep Consumptions, to be given daily, Morning and Evening, either alone, or in some Pectoral Decoction’. (Salmon)
It also benefits the Heart (for which Avicenna commended it), and is therefore useful in Heart disease, especially in the old and weak.
Traditionally regarded as promoting Strength and Vigor, improving Intellect and Will, and improving the Complexion. (Bates, Salmon)
