Syrupus Tussilaginus Compositum

Amount
½ lb.

4 handfuls ea.
2 handfuls
1 oz.

Preparation:
Boil the bruised roots in 8 pints of Spring Water for half an hour; add the leaves, boil another 15 minutes. Next add the Licorice, Maidenhair, and Flowers; boil briefly, then remove from the heat; strain and press when cool, and clarify with an egg white. Strain and add 5 lbs. of White Sugar and make a Syrup. It was usually made into a thick syrup like an Electuary so that it could be licked often.

Function:
Clears Phlegm, Stops Cough and Wheezing, clears the Throat

Use:
1. Hoarseness
2. Sore Throat
3. Loss of Voice
4. Cough, Bronchitis
5. Asthma
6. Shortness of Breath, Difficulty Breathing

Dose:

½–1 oz.; 1 teaspoonful for a child.
Besty used as a licking medicine for Hoarseness and Cough.


Cautions:
Should not be used long term.

Modifications:
1. Some used 6 handfuls each of fresh leaf and flower of Coltsfoot, and omitted the roots.
2. Some added 1 handful of Hyssop
3. Some added Dates, Figs, Jujubes and Raisins
