Dang Gui (Chinese Angelica)
Chuan Xiong (Ligusticum)
Tao Ren (Peach kernel)
Pao Jiang (Fried Ginger)
Zhi Gan Cao (Fried Licorice)

Latin
Angelica sinensis
Ligusticum chuanxiong
Prunus persica

Zingiber officinalis
Glycyrrhiza uralensis
Amount
24 grams
9 grams
6 grams

1 ½
grams ea.

Preparation:
Form a standard decoction, sometimes a little wine is added to the strained decoction.
Traditionally decocted in equal parts of rice wine and boy's urine.


Function:
Moves the Blood, resolves Stasis, eases Pain

Use:
Cold pain in the lower abdomen, purplish tongue color, thin and choppy pulse
1. Retention of the Lochia
2. Postpartum Pain
3. Chronic Endometriosis

Dose:

Take the above in 3 equal doses over the day.

Cautions:
1. Not used during Pregnancy.
2. Not used in cases with Heat

3. Not used in Postpartum Hemorrhage.

Modifications:
1. As a postpartum tonic when there is only mild pain, omit Peach kernel (Tao Ren)
2. For strong pain, add Corydalis Yan Hu Suo.
3. More severe Cold, add Cinnamon (Rou Gui)
4. For signs of Heat, add Paeonia Mu Dan Pi.
5. Postpartum Fever, add Bupleurum Chai Hu and Scutellaria Huang Qin
6. Severe Postpartum debility, add Ginseng and/or Astragalus Huang Qin.
7. To help Uterus return to its proper location following labor, add Motherwort (Yi Mu Cao).
8. Ectopic Pregnancy, add Cinnamon twig (Gui Zhi), Paeonia Mu Dan Pi, Poria Fu Ling
