- M. neglecta (Dwarf Mallow) is also used, and is said to be stronger.

TCM:
C. Clear Damp, Promote Urine
Uses:
1. Clears Heat and Damp, Promotes Urine:
-urinary pain or frequency; urgent and burning urination
-Blood in the Urine
-Stones
-'disperses pathogenic Heat and Cold from the Five Viscera and Six Bowels'. (Ben Cao Gang Mu)
2. Clears Heat, Benefits Breasts, Promotes Milk:
-promotes Milk
-Breast swelling or Abscesses
3. Moistens the Intestines:
-Constipation in the old or weak
-Constipation from dryness
-'promotes Delivery' (Li Shi Zhen)
4. Clears Heat, Stops Cough:
-heat-type Cough, Bronchitis, Hoarseness
-Pleurisy, Hemoptysis
5. Externally:
-used in emollient Enemas
-topically in plasters to soften and soothe
Dose:
Seed in Decoction: 3–9 grams
Seed in Powder: 2–4 grams
Comment:
1. Mallow herb and seed are used similarly. The seed is more moistening.
2. Mallow seed and Musk Mallow seed used in TCM can be used synonymously.
Correctives:
1. Fennel seed
2. Garlic (Li Shi Zhen), when eaten as a food)
Substitutes:
1. Musk Mallow seed (Dong Kui Zi) of TCM may be used as Mallow seed.
2. Marshmallow seed; various Mallow seeds may be used similarly.
Preparation:
The seed can be stir-fried until fragrant. This makes it less cold and is used to promote lactation and for breast swelling.
Seed in Decoction: 3–9 grams
Seed in Powder: 2–4 grams

i. Mallow seed, with Figs, Raisins, Aniseed, Hyssop, Licorice, Almonds, Fennel root (as in Decoction for Asthma from Crass Humors)
ii. Mallow seed with Elecampane, Licorice, Maidenhair, Coltsfoot, Violet, Thyme, Aniseed, Agaric, Fig (as in Syrup for Asthma)
2. Pleurisy:
i. Mallow seed with Fenugreek, roasted Linseed, Chickpea, Licorice juice (as in Troches for Pleurisy when not from Vehement Heat )
ii. Mallow seed with fresh Violet, Quince seed, Melon seed, Gum Arabic, Tragacanth (as in Syrup of Violet)
2. Hemoptysis, Mallow seed with Jujube, Gum Arabic, Tragacanth, Aniseed
3. To clear hot, sharp and corroding Humors in Consumption, painful Urination, Stones, Bloody Dysentery, and internal Ulcers, combine Marshmallow seed, Mallow seed, Quince seed and Tragacanth.
4. Water retention, Edema, Mallow seed with Tribulus seed (Tibetan Medicine)
TCM:
1. Edema, Edema during Pregnancy, postpartum Edema, Malva Dong Gui Zi with Poria Fu Ling
2. Strangury from Heat, Malva Dong Gui Zi with Pyrrosia Shi Wei, Dianthus Qu Mai, Talcum (Hua Shi)
3. Urinary stones, Burning Urine, Malva Dong Gui Zi with Plantain seed (TCM)
4. Insufficient Lactation or swollen painful breasts from Qi stagnation, stir-fried Malva Dong Gui Zi with Amomum Sha Ren
(equal parts). Powder and take 6 grams with warm wine. (Li Shi Zhen)
5. Constipation from dryness, Malva Dong Gui Zi with Cannabis seed (TCM)
