Uses:
1. Clears Heat and Toxin:
-Sores, Boils, Toxic Swellings; it drains pus and promotes healing
-it can disperse Sores before pus has formed and drain pus once formed
-Red, Sore, Swollen or Inflamed Eyes and Throat
-Swellings of the Breast; Abscesses of the Lung or Intestine
-Cancer (inc. Liver, Glioma); Volatile components, Polyphenols, Falvonoids & Lignans showed anti-cancer activity)
2. Clears Wind-Heat, Promotes Sweat:
-acute Wind-Heat cold and flu with Fever, Chills and Fever, Sore Throat, Headache
-used for acute 'Summer-heat'; Wind-Heat Cold during Summer
3. Clears Damp-Heat from the Lower Abdomen:
-Damp-Heat Diarrhea or Dysentery
-Painful and Dribbling Urine
4. Nourishes Blood, Relieves Thirst:
-while this effect is mild, it is useful to acknowledge as it is indicated in Heat-Toxic with deficiency
-it is also effective for acute Wind-Heat with Thirst
Dose:
Decoction: 6–9 grams for acute Wind-Heat Cold and Flu; 12–20 grams in decoction for Heat-Toxin, Sores, Abscesses etc.
Powder: 1–4 grams
Preparation:
The flowers may be charred in a dry wok. This is less effective to promote Sweat, but is better to clear Heat-Toxin from the Blood.
Substitutes:
1. Forsythia Lian Qiao
2. Elder flower
Decoction: 6–9 grams for acute Wind-Heat Cold and Flu; 12–20 grams in decoction for Heat-Toxin, Sores, Abscesses etc.
Powder: 1–4 grams
Preparation:

Main Combinations:
Lonicera Jin Yin Hua with Forsythia Lian Qiao
1. Lonicera Jin Yin Hua is commonly combined with Forsythia Lian Qiao for Wind-Heat and Heat-Toxin conditions:
i. add Peppermint and Licorice for acute Wind-Heat
ii. add Dandelion and Chrysanthemum Ju Hua (or Ye Ju Hua) for Toxic Swellings and Internal Abscesses
iii. for High Fever, add Coptis Huang Lian and Scutellaria Huang Qin
iv. add Isatidis Da Qing Ye for purpuric rash during Epidemic disease
v. Toxic Sores, add Licorice and Burdock seed (Niu Bang Zi)
vi. Ulcers with Heat-Toxin, add Licorice and Figwort root (Xuan Shen)
2. Fever, Lonicera Jin Yin Hua with Isatis Folium Da Qing Ye or Isatis Radix Ban Lan Gen, Forsythia Lian Qiao and Gypsum (Shi Gao)
3. Painful, deep-rooted Boils, Lonicera Jin Yin Hua with Violet (Zi Hua Di Ding), Dandelion (Pu Gong Ying), Wild Chrysanthemum (Ye Ju Hua)
4. Abscesses:
i. Lonicera Jin Yin Hua with Trichosanthes root (Tian Hua Fen), Dandelion (Pu Gong Ying)
ii. Lung Abscess: Lonicera Jin Yin Hua with Platycodon Jie Geng, Houttuynia Yu Xing Cao
iii. Internal Abscess: Lonicera Jin Yin Hua with Cirsium Da Ji and Burnet root (Di Yu)
iv. Abscesses, Furuncles, Lonicera Jin Yin Hua with Semiaquilegia Tian Kui Zi, Violet (Zi Hua Di Ding), Chrysanthemum Ju Hua
v. early stage Breast Abscess, Lonicera Jin Yin Hua with Salvia Dan Shen and Forsythia Lian Qiao
vi. Breast Abscess, Lonicera Jin Yin Hua with Vaccaria Wang Bu Liu Xing, Citrus Qing Pi, Dandelion (Pu Gong Ying)
5. Carbuncles:
i. Lonicera Jin Yin Hua with Licorice.
ii. Lonicera Jin Yin Hua with Rhubarb, Scutellaria Huang Qin
6. Angry red Sores, Canker sores
i. In Licorice decoction boil the leaf, seed and root of (European) Honeysuckle until it is as thick as honey; apply topically. (The Secrets of Alexis, 1615)
7. Spots and Pimples of the face, distil (European) Honeysuckle water and wash the face often. (The Secrets of Alexis, 1615)
8. Bleeding Intestinal Abscess or Dysentery with Blood or Appendicitis with abdominal pain, Lonicera Jin Yin Hua with Scutellaria Huang Qin and Sanguisorba Di Yu.
