Eyewash of Calamine

Preparation:
Heat the Calamine red hot, and quench it in the wine, which repeat 7-8 times. Decant the liquor, filter, and keep in a glass close stopped for use.
Function:
Clears Heat, Benefits the Eyes, Astringent
Use:
1. Sore, Red Eyes
2. Conjunctivitis
3. Tearing of the Eyes
4. Swelling of the Eyes
5. Corneal Opacity
6. Pterygium
7. Keratitis
Dose:
Dropped into the corners of the eyes several times daily
Cautions:
None noted
Modifications:
Some made it with 1⁄2 oz. finely powder Calamine, digested in 1⁄2 pint each of White Wine and Rose water or Eyebright water. This is shaken daily to extract a tincture, then strained through fine cloth.
Salmon said ‘It is the most certain remedy for Sore, Running and Rheumatic Eyes that is yet known: I have known it do wonders in that case when all other things have failed’.
