Thyroid Cancer

Thyroid Cancer starts in the cells of the Thyroid gland. It often has no symptoms in the early stage but symptoms develop as the Cancer increases. Most Thyroid Cancer progress slowly although some rarer types are aggressive. It is the most common endocrine cancer with more than 500,000 cases anually worldwide.

Signs:
  • Swelling, Lump or Nodule in the neck, Lymph nodes in the neck
  • Change in Voice
  • Difficulty Swallowing
  • Pain in the Throat or Neck
Approximately 2–5% of Thyroid nodules are Cancerous.

Types:
There are a number of type of Thyroid Cancer, some of them include:
  • Papillary Thyroid Cancer–most common Thyroid Cancer, usually between ages of 30 and 50 and can usually be treated successfully.
  • Follicular Thyroid Cancer–rare, most commonly over 50
  • Hurthle Cell Thyroid Cancer–rare; previously considered a type of Follicular thyroid cancer
  • Poorly Differentiated Thyroid Cancer–rare, aggressive, difficult to treat
  • Anaplastic Thyroid Cancer-rare, grows quickly, difficult to treat

Risk Factors:
  • Being female (more common in women)
  • Family History
  • Exposure to Radiation
  • Excess Iodine intake such as from seaweeds has also been associated
Its incidence has been increasing in many countries.

Treatment
Modern Treatment often involves Thyroidectomy along with life-long Thyroxin replacement. Radiotherapy may also be prescribed.

In Traditional Medicine, it generally falls under the category of Scrofula and Nodules. Formulas that treat Scrofula may be useful in the treatment of Thyroid Cancer. Some cases present with a Phlegm constitution, and in these cases Formulas to resolve Phlegm may be used. Other cases may present with Heat, and in this cases it is often classed as Phlegm-Heat.
