Tonify the Lungs Decoction

Shu Di Huang (Rehmannia)
Wu Wei Zi (Schisandra)

Zi Wan (Aster)
Sang Bai Pi (Mulberry bark)
Latin
Panax ginseng
Astragalus mongholicus
Rehmannia glutinosa

Schisandra chinensis
Aster tartaricus
Morus alba
Amount
3–9 grams

12–24 grams ea.
6 grams
9 grams
9–12 grams


Preparation:
Prepare a standard decoction.

Function:
Strengthens the Lungs

Use:
Breathlessness, spontaneous sweating, Cough, Wheezing, low voice, Pale tongue, weak pulse
1. Chronic Cough
2. Chronic Bronchitis
3. Asthma
4. Emphysema
5. Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)
6. Recurring Colds or Influenza

Dose:

The above decoction is divided into 3 equal doses to be taken over the course of a day.
Used in the form of Powder, the dose is 3–6 grams, 2–3 times daily


Cautions:
Not used for Excess / Heat-type Cough and Wheezing

Modifications:
1. Severe Wheezing, add Ephedra
2. Chronic Bronchitis, add Coltsfoot (Kuan Dong Hua)
3. Asthma, add Chebula (He Zi) and Ginkgo (Bai Guo)
4. Asthma, add Apricot kernel (Xing Ren), Magnolia bark (Hou Po)
5. Asthma or Breathlessness with Kidney Yang deficiency, take with Ren Shen Ge Jie San.
6. With Lung Yin Deficiency, add Ophiopogon Mai Men Dong and Asparagus Tian Men Dong
7. Severe Qi deficiency, take with Si Jun Zi Tang
8. Excess Phlegm, take with Er Chen Tang

9. Recurring Colds and Flu, add Atractylodes Bai Zhu and Saposhnikovia Fang Feng.
