Mineralogical Name:
Opalus

Parts used:
prepared stone

Temperature & Taste:
Neutral/Cooling. Sweet, Salty

Constituents:
Hydrous silicon dioxide (SiO2·nH2O)
Opal contains up to 20% water

Uses:
1. Clears Heat, Resists Poison:

-‘It stimulates the Heart, preserves from Contagious and Infectious airs, Drives away Despondency, prevents Fainting, Heart disease and Malignant affections’ (16th C.).
-disperses and prevents Fevers and Infection, and purifies the Blood.
-all diseases caused by 'Evil Spirits' (eg. 'possession' and negative mental and spiritual influences) (Tibetan Medicine).

2. Benefits Yin and Essence:
-‘It has the virtues of the Ruby, Amethyst, and Smaragus [Emerald]’ (Salmon)
-good tonic in all diseases.
-said to be a universal stone, helping many parts of the body.

3. Strengthens the Heart and Mind, Calms the Spirit:
-Strengthens the Heart and Spirit.
-Despondency, Fear, Anger
-traditionally said to awaken psychic and mystical qualities.
-strengthens the Memory
-stimulates the circulation.
-Shamans have used it to invoke visions
-Opal is believed to give its wearer a more Spiritual focus, and a deeper faith in God. (Ayurveda)


Dose:
Levigated Powder: 200mg–1 gram

Comment:
1. To the ancients, Opal was revered as a very special stone. In ancient India, it was one of the most highly regarded stones. Pliny said 'It is made up of all the glories of the most precious gems, and to describe it is a matter of inexpressible difficulty'. It was said to have the effect of all other gems, as it contains the colors of all the gems. 'It is reported to have as many virtues as it has colors, but what they are, authors are something silent in' (Salmon)

Preparation:
1. Levigated with Rose water for internal use.
2. In Tibetan Medicine, it is prepared as Turquoise (which see)
3. It may be prepared as for Quartz, Chalcedony or Flint.
