Momordica fruit, Luo Han Guo 罗汉果

Botanical name:
Momordica grosvenorii fruit (syn. Siraitia grosvernori, Thladiantha grosvernori)

Parts used:
Dried Fruit (fresh fruit is rarely used)

Temperature & Taste:
Cool, moist. Sweet

Uses:
1. Moistens the Lungs, Clears Heat, Stops Cough:
-heat-type Cough and hot-phlegm type Lung congestion
-acute Sore Throat, Bronchitis, Whooping Cough
-also hot-phlegm type Scrofula and Nodes

2. Promotes Fluids, Stops Thirst:
-Thirst from various causes

3. Benefits Yin:
-traditionally regarded as a Longevity tonic

4. Moistens the Intestines:
-Constipation from heat and dryness
-a weight-loss aid
-chronic Enteritis

DOSE:
9–15 grams in infusion or decoction
half–2 fruits is an acceptable dose.

COMMENT:
1. Considered a health food, Luo Han Guo can be used as a sweetener in foods and teas.
2. Leaf is used similarly, especially for chronic Sore Throat and chronic Bronchitis.

Main Combinations:
1. Phlegm-Heat Cough:
i. Momordica Luo Han Guo with Licorice
ii. Momordica Luo Han Guo with Platycodon Jie Geng, Mulberry bark (Sang Bai Pi)
iii. Momordica Luo Han Guo stewed with lean Pork (from Ling Nan Cai Yao Lu [Records of Herb Collection in Lingnan])
2. Cough from dryness, Momordica Luo Han Guo with Soloman's Seal (Yu Zhu)
3. Cough from Damp-Phlegm, Momordica Luo Han Guo with Citrus Chen Pi, Pinellia Ban Xia.
4. Thirst:
i. Momordica Luo Han Guo with Ophiopogon Mai Men Dong
ii. Momordica Luo Han Guo with Asparagus root
5. Scrofula, Momordica Luo Han Guo with Self Heal (Xia Ku Cao)
6. Tuberculosis of the lymph nodes, Momordica Luo Han Guo with Fritillaria Zhe Bei Mu, Cremastra Shan Ci Gu, and Chestnut shell (from Ling Nan Cai Yao Lu [Records of Herb Collection in Lingnan])
7. Constipation from dryness, Momordica Luo Han Guo with Cannabis seed Huo Ma Ren and Apricot kernel (Xing Ren)
