Lapis Limacis, Lapis Celonites, Cochlite, Snail and Slug Stone
Stone from the Heads of Slugs and Snails.
Aldrovani, Musaeum Metallicum, 1648
Stones taken from the Heads of Snails and Slugs were called Lapis Celonites and Lapis Limacis respectively; they were usually regarded as synonymous, the term Lapis Limacis usually being used for either; Limacis is Latin for both Slug and Snail.
Lapis Limacis is a small white oval stone found in the heads of Slugs.
Cochlites, regarded as similar to Lapis Limacis, are thought to be fossil shells with a mouth like a snail. See Fossil Shells.
