Irish Slate, Lapis Hybernicus

Minerological name:
Lapis Hybernicus
A foliated metamorphic rock formed from clay or volcanic-ash sediment.

Parts used:
Blue-grey slate from Ireland; softer than regular slate

Temperature & Taste:
Cool, dry.

Constituents:
Mainly composed of clay-minerals, quartz and mica, including muscovite, often with biotite, chlorite, hematite, pyrite.
Less commonly it may contain traces of apatite, graphite, kaolinite, magnetite, tourmaline, zircon or feldspar.
Contains traces of Iron, Copper and Alum.


Uses:
1. Clears Heat, Stops Bleeding:

-used for all types of Bleeding from Heat
-Hemotysis, Uterine bleeding

2. Moves the Blood, Clears Stasis:
-Bruises, Sprains, Trauma
-Postpartum Pain

3. Clears Wind-Heat, Stops Cough:
-used for Lung Heat Cough, Bronchitis, Pleurisy
-Fever including Quartan Fevers
-Rheumatic pains

4. Externally:
-topically for Chronic Ulcers and Running Ulcers


Dose:
Levigated Powder: 1–3 grams (up to 6 grams was taken) in Broth, or in wine or beer for Bruising and Trauma.

Comment:
1. This was not known to the Greeks or Arabs, but was a later introduction, primarily used in Great Britain. It apparently never found widespread use.
2. It is interesting the Mica content may be associate with Chlorite Qing Meng Shi (TCM) and Biotite Mica Bhasma (Ayurveda) which are both also used for Lung conditions and also have blood-moving effects.

Main Combinations:
1. Bruises:
i. powder of Irish Slate was taken with Spruce Beer (Lewis)
ii. Irish Slate, Shilajit
iii. Irish Slate, Rhubarb, Dragons Blood
iv. Irish Slate, Mummy (Shilajit), Salt of Amber, Salt of Deer Horn (Fullers)
2. To stop Bleeding:
i. the powder is taken in Conserve of Roses. (Manget)
3. Pleurisy, Irish Slate, Amber

Major Formulas:

Cautions:
1. Not used during pregnancy
2. Not for marked digestive weakness.
