Botanical name:
Ipomoea sepiaria (syn. I. marginata, I. maxima, I. sagittifolia, Convolvulus marginatus)
The Ayurvedic plant Lakshmana has also been equated with Ginseng and Mandrake.


Parts used:
Root; sometimes the whole plant

Temperature & Taste:
Cool, dry. Sweet

Classification:


Uses:
1. Strengthens Kidneys, Benefits the Uterus:

-Female Infertility
-Uterine tonic
-Threatened Miscarriage
-excessive Menstruation
-regarded as Aphrodisiac
-promotes Strength, increases Longevity, regarded as Rejuvenative

2. Nourish Yin, Clears Heat:
-Burning Sensation
-Thirst
-Strangury
-Diabetes

3. Resists Poison:
-effective against various poisons
-Insect Bites and Stings, Viper bites
-regarded as an antidote to Arsenic

4. Promotes Bowel Movement:
-has a gentle laxative action, increases intestinal motility (leaf)


Dose:
1. Root or Whole Plant can be used in similar doses.
2. Taken with Milk for Infertility
Powder: 1–3 grams
Leaf juice: 5–10 mls.

Comment:
One of the 10 Sacred Flowers in Kerala

Main Combinations:
1. Female Infertility:
i. Ipomoea sepiaria Root powder is taken with Milk
ii. Ipomoea sepiaria with Asparagus Shatavari, Withania
2. Debility:
i. Ipomoea sepiaria decocted with milk and water, with Jaggery added
ii. Ipomoea sepiaria, Withania
3. Leukorrhea, Ipomoea sepiaria root powder is taken with Rice water.
4. Threatened Miscarriage, take Ipomoea sepiaria with Inula racemosa
