Galangal & Cyperus
Galangal is warm, dry and pungent. It is similar in nature and use to Ginger being very good for Cold disorders of the Stomach. It also warms the Kidneys and is used for Wind-Phlegm diseases of the Brain such as Dizziness and Vertigo. It is also good for Heart Palpitations and Angina Pectoris.
Cyperus is warm, dry, aromatic and pungent. It moves the Qi and releases constraint. It is used for various conditions associated with blocked Qi such as abdominal fullness and pain, and menstrual irregularities and pain. It is also good for Arthritic and Rheumatic pains.
Together, they Warm, clear Cold and Damp, and move Qi. They effect the Stomach and Spleen in particular, but also the Liver, Heart and Kidneys.
In TCM, these 2 herbs in equal parts form Liang Fu Wan, Galangal and Cyperus Pill. It is considered specific for Epigastric and Abdominal pain associated with Cold and Qi stagnation. It is also used for Hypochondriac pain, stifling sensation in the chest and painful Menstruation.
They are combined for Cold Stomach disorders including Poor appetite, Indigestion, Stomach pain and Colic, and for Inflammation of the Bowels.
They are also good for Urinary disorders including Edema, Strangury, Dysuria as well as Incontinence. They are also indicated in Cold Joint pains, Lumbago, Arthritis and Rheumatism with both herbs having marked anti-inflammatory and analgesic activity.
In addition, they are used for Palpitations and Chest pain, and to promote Menstruation and relieve Menstrual pain. Galangal has been found to be as effective as nitroglycerin in the treatment of Angina Pectoris while Cyperus has anti-platelet and vasodilatory effects.
Both medicines have an effect on the Brain and Nervous system and have been used to strengthen the Brain.

Not suitable for Yin deficiency.
1. Cold Stomach pain, Indigestion and Colic add Clove, Wormwood, Mint (as in Powder to Warm the Belly of Rondeletius)
2. Incontinence, add Comfrey, Plantain and Horsetail (as in Wine for Incontinence)
