Deglued Deer Horn, Lu Jiao Shuang 鹿角霜

Zoological name:
Cervus spp.
A number of Deer species have been used, the main sources in TCM are:
  1. C. nippon (Sika Deer)
  2. C. elaphus (Red Deer)

Parts used:
Horn remaining after prolonged boiling to extract the gelatin.

Temperature & Taste:
Slightly Warm, dry. Sweet, Salty
 
Uses:
1. Warms and Strengthens the Kidney Yang:

-Diarrhea and poor digestion from Spleen and Kidney Yang deficiency (Internal Cold)
-leukorrhea and coldness of the lower abdomen from Cold and weak Kidneys
-also Threatened or Habitual Miscarriage from Kidney Yang deficiency.

2. Promotes Healing, Stops Bleeding:
-chronic or slow-healing sores (apply topically)
-Bleeding from cuts (apply topically)


Dose:
Decoction: 10–15 grams
Powder used topically

Preparation:
See the making of Deer Horn Glue; this is the dried remnants left after extracting.

Main Combinations:
1. Threatened Miscarriage, Deglued Deer Horn with Dodder seed (Tu Si Zi), Dipsacus Xu Duan, Euccommia Du Zhong, Dang Gui, Atractylodes Bai Zhu (as in Bu Shen Gu Chong Wan)

Major Formulas:
Bu Shen Gu Chong Wan

Cautions:
1. Avoid in Deficient Heat (Heat with Yin deficiency), including Bleeding due to deficient Heat.
2. Phlegm-heat in the Lungs or Stomach
3. Heat causing excess or stagnation
