Uses:
1. Warms the Stomach, Promotes Digestion (TCM, West):
-Food Stagnation with poor appetite with or without constipation. (TCM)
-Vomiting and diarrhea due to indigestion (Chinese Pharmacopoeia)
-promotes digestion, used for nausea, indigestion, poor appetite.
-‘benefit the Spleen and Middle Warmer, in addition to the promotion of digestion, appetite, the muscles and bones’. (TCM)
-especially for Indigestion with Stomach weakness where Nutrition is not absorbed (Unani)
-Vomiting of Pregnancy.
-'indigestion caused by alcoholism'. (Li Shi Zhen)
-strengthens the Stomach, stop Vomiting and fluxes [diarrhea]. (Salmon)
-"corroborates the Stomach, flops Fluxes". (Medicinalis Hibernica, K'eogh, 1739)
2. Clears Heat and Damp, Clears Stones (West, TCM):
-Stones and Gravel from the urinary tract, and of the Gall-Bladder.
-a tincture has been used for Gall Stones.
-also for the Strangury and painful urination associated with Stones
-'Urinary dripping with intolerable pain'. (Yi Lin Ji Yao, TCM)
-Jaundice.
3. Stops Leakages (TCM, West):
-an astringent for bed-wetting, incontinence, frequent or night urination.
-diarrhea, leukorrhea, spermatorrhea, Enuresis, Polyuria and bloody urine.
-TCM use the skin prepared with Vinegar for enuresis and nocturnal emission

4. Moves the Blood, clears Obstruction:
-Amenorrhea and masses in the Abdomen (TCM)
-Used to promote birth, and cleanse the afterbirth (West);
-‘The drug is effective to remove any kind of stagnation in the internal organs’. (TCM)
5. Externally:
-the powder can be applied to Sores, Ulcers and Gum Ulcers (TCM)
-chronic non-healing sores, apply topically (Xiao Shan Qi Fang, TCM)
-powder is blown directly onto inflamed and sore throat and tonsillitis. (Qing Nang Fang, TCM)
-chronic anal sores, apply the powder (Sheng Li Zong Lu, TCM)
-Chancre of the penis, mouth or nose, apply the powder of the burned Gizzard skin. (Jing Yan Fang, TCM)
-Infantile Warts, rub the part with Chicken Gizzard Skin (Ji Yao Fang, TCM)
Dose:
The Powder of the Stir-fried Gizzard Skin is more effective than the decoction.
Powder: 1–3 grams
Decoction: 3–10 grams (TCM)

Substitutes:
1. Gizzards from various related Fowls can be used.
2. Hawthorn fruit (Shan Zha) is an appropriate herbal susbtitute. Gizzard skin is more effective for all types of Food Stagnation and strengthens the Stomach while Hawthorn is particularly effective for Food Stagnation from overconsumption of meat and fatty foods and also moves the Blood.
Preparation:
First of all the Gizzard is removed from its lining, then well washed.
1. Prepared Gizzard Skin (West):
The Gizzard skin is thoroughly washed with wine, then dried for use. To facilitate drying once washed, it can be dipped in brandy then allowed to dry, dipping in brandy again and repeating until thoroughly dry. (West)
2. Prepared Gizzard Skin (TCM):
The Gizzard is removed and its lining is separated immediately, then washed in water, and dried in the sun or a low oven. (TCM)
Much of the product on the Chinese market has been sulphured to keep a bright, clean-looking product.
3. Stir-Fried Chicken Gizzard skin:
The dried Gizzard skin is Stir-Fried until yellowed, then removed from the Heat. This is used for Food Stagnation, as well as enuresis and incontinence. (TCM)
4. Vinegar stir-fried:
Dried Gizzard skin pieces are stir-fried until they begin to swell, then they are sprayed with vinegar, removed from the heat, and dried. This is best for Enuresis and Spermatorrhea. (TCM)

4. Indigestion from alcoholism, Chicken Gizzard Skin, Pueraria Ge Gen (equal parts), powdered. Add wheat flour and make pills the size of parasol seeds. Dose: 50 pills with wine. (Xiu Zhen Fang, TCM)
