Albizia Flower, Silk-Tree flower, He Huan Hua 合欢花

Botanical name:
Albizia julibrissin
Synonyms: A. nemu, A. rosea, Mimosa julibrissin, M. speciosa, Feuilleea julibrissin, Acacia julibrissin
Ayurveda and Unani use A. lebbeck and A. odoratissima

Parts used:
Dried stem-bark

Temperature & Taste:
Neutral, Sweet

Uses:
1. Calms the Spirit, Moves Liver Qi:
(TCM)
-Insomnia, Forgetfulness
-Irritability, Excessive Emotions, Depression
-Stomach discomfort or pressure on the Chest from excess Worry and Emotions

2. Clears Heat, Stops Cough and Wheezing: (Ayurveda)
-Bronchitis, Asthma

3. Moves the Blood, Relieves Pain: (TCM)
-Back pain
-Trauma, Bruising, injuries from Falls

4. Clears the Eyes: (TCM)
-blurred Vision
-eye redness or pain from Wind-Heat
-the leaves are used for night-blindness (juice applied, decoction internally) (Ayurveda)

5. Astringes the Essence:
-used as a sperm tonic in Ayurveda
-sperm retentive; Premature Ejaculation

6. Externally:
-Erysipelas (Ayurveda)


Dose:
Decoction: 3–9 grams
Powder: 1–3 grams, taken with Wine to move the Blood and for Trauma.

Comment:
1. The Flower and Bark of this tree are similar in effect. The Bark is regarded as having greater affinity for the Blood, the Flowers for Qi. The Bark can help move the Blood after Trauma, the Flower is more gentle, and can be used when Qi obstruction associated with emotions affects the Stomach and Digestion.
2. Several Indian sources have stated that A. lebbeck and A. julibrissin can be used similarly, and it appears that that latter (Chinese variety) is used synonymously for A. lebbeck in some parts of India. A. odoritissima is also used synonymously in India. We have considered them synonymous.

Main Combinations:
1. Insomnia and Emotions, with Polygonum Ye Jiao Teng
2. Asthma:
i. Albizia flower with long Pepper and Honey (Ayurveda, Charaka)
3. Erysipelas, Albizia flower applied with Ghee
4. Chronic Leg and low Back pain, with Achyranthes Niu Xi, Safflower (Hong Hua), Almond kernel (Xing Ren), Cinnamon (Gui Pi) (as in He Huan Hua Wan from Tai Ping Sheng Hui Fang [Taiping Holy Prescriptions for Universal Relief])
5. Trauma, the powder alone has been taken with Wine.

Cautions:
Generally Safe
Use cautiously in Yin deficiency
