Tinospora Starch, Giloy Satva

Botanical name:
Tinospora cordifolia and related species. (See Tinospora)

Parts used:
Starch extracted by water extract

Temperature & Taste:
Warm (Neutral), Sweet, Bitter
Balance Vata (Wind) and Pitta (Bile)


Classification:


Uses:
1. Strengthens Stomach, Benefits Digestion:

–Indigestion, malabsorption
–Colic, bloating, abdominal distention
–Heartburn, chronic Gastritis
–clears Ama (toxic residue from undigested food)
–gentle laxative whioch softens the stool


2. Nourishes Kidneys and Liver Yin:
–Diabetes; Hypolgycemic activity has been shown
–improves Kidney and Liver function,
–increases stamina and is regarded as Aphrodisiac
–improves complexion, enhances Eyesight
–regarded as maintaining youthfulness
–Consumption, Emaciation
–Dry Mouth


3. Clears Wind-Heat, Resists Poison:
–acute Fever, Cold and Flu
–Chronic Fever including Dengue and Malarial Fever
–Sore Throat, acute Cough, Bronchitis, Wheezing
–Improves immune function
–improves skin–used for Eczema, Itching, Acne
–Burning sensation
–considered very useful for Gout (Wind-Heat type Arthritis)


4. Strengthens Heart, Calms Mind and Spirit:
–benefiial for the Heart
–Anxiety, restlessness, mild depression
–strengthens cognitive abilities, neuroprotective

5. Clears Heat, Stops Bleeding:
–Menorrhagia
–Bleeding from Nose
–Blood in the stool



Dose:
500mg–2 grams of the Starch twice daily, taken with Ghee or Honey.
For Indigestion and Heartburnt, take with Emblic Myrobalan extract or decoction, or with Buttermilk
A little of the starch can be diluted with water, soaked on cotton balls and applied to the eyelids to benefit eyesight. The eyes are washed with fresh water after.


Preparation:
Fresh stems of Tinospora and washed, peeled, and cut into short sections. They are covered with four times their weight of water, mashed for a while, then left to sit overnight. After 12 hours, the stems are again agitated well. The liquid is then pressed well, then strained through fine cloth or wire mesh (size 100). Leave the liquid to settle for 4 hours, then carefully remove the clear water to separate it from the starch which has settled in the bottom. The liquid is air-dried with a fan in a gentle heat. Then dried powder is collected and kept for use.

1. Fever:
i. take with Sudarshana Churna
2. Excess Bile (Pitta/Heat), take with Emblic Extract or Amalakl Rasayana
3. Cough, take with Talisadi Churna
4. Diabetes, take with Nishamalaki Churna
