Preparation:
Form a coarse powder to be prepared as a decoction for 1 cup. Today, Astragalus and Rehmannia root is increased in dosage. The Ginseng is either cooked separately in a double boiler, or else the powder of Ginseng can be taken along with the rest in decoction.
It is also used in pill or powder form.
Function:
Tonifies Qi and Blood, Strengthens Spleen, Calms the Fetus
Use:
Fatigue, Pale face, Pale tongue with a thin white coat, weak pulse
1. Restless Fetus
2. Threatened Miscarriage
3. Habitual Miscarriage
Dose:
The above is decocted to be taken as a dose away from meals.
In Powder or Pill form, 3–6 grams can be taken three times daily.
Cautions:
1. Not used in Heat conditions; only used in deficient conditions.
2. Avoid alcohol, sour, pungent and hot foods while taking this medicine.
Modifications:
1. Codonopsis Dang Shen usually replaces Ginseng unless there is marked deficiency.
2. Severe Blood deficiency, add Donkey Hide Gelatin (E Jiao) and increase the dose of Astragalus Huang Qi
3. With vaginal bleeding:
i. add Mugwort (Ai Ye)
ii. Excessive Bleeding, add Agrimony (Xian He Cao), Donkey Hide Gelatin (E Jiao)
4. Lower Back Pain:
i. add Eucommia Du Zhong, Mistletoe (Sang Ji Sheng)
ii. add Eucommia Du Zhong, Dodder seed (Tu Si Zi)
