Tian Hua Fen (Trichosanthes root)

Trichosanthes kirilowii

Mo Yao (Myrrh)

Commiphora myrrh

Ru Xiang (Frankincense)

Boswellia sacra

3 grams ea.

Jin Yin Hua (Honeysuckle)

Lonicera japonica

Chen Pi (Aged Tangerine peel)

Citrus reticulata

9 grams ea.

* Pangolin scales are usually omitted in modern practice

Preparation:

Decoction
Traditionally decocted 5–7 times in a bowl of alcohol (Bai Jiu)
Today, it is prepared as a standard decoction in water, or a mixture of equal parts of water and alcohol. In addition, a little alcohol can be added to a water decoction, or it could be prepared as a tincture.

Function:

Clears Heat and Toxin, Moves the Blood, Relieves Swelling

Use:

1. Early stage Toxic Sores, Boils, Carbuncles and Abscesses
2. Internal Abscess, including abscess of the Breast, Tonsils
3. Acute Mastitis
4. Cellulitis
5. Osteomyelitis
6. Pelvic Inflammatory Disease
7. Tumors
8. Wound Infections

Dose:

The above is taken over the course of the day

Cautions:

1. Not used during Pregnancy
2. Caution in Spleen and Stomach weakness (Digestive weakness). Use may cause vomiting or nausea in some people.
3. Caution in Qi and Blood deficiency
4. Not for Deep rooted sores (Yin sores), or Ulcerated Lesions
5. Not suitable for long-term use. Once the acute condition has resolved, more appropriate formulas are used to treat the underlying condition.

Modifications:

1. Sores or Abscesses of the Head, add Ligusticum Chuan Xiong
2. Sores or Abscesses of the Chest, add Trichosanthe Gua Lou
3. Sores or Abscesses of the lower body, add Achyranthes Niu Xi
4. Sores or Abscesses of the Neck add Platycodon Jie Geng
5. More severe swelling and pain, add Violet (Zi Hua Di Ding) and Dandelion (Pu Gong Ying)
6. More severe Heat and Inflammation, add Coptis Huang Lian and Philodendron Huang Bai
7. Severe Heat and Toxin, add Rhubarb (Da Huang)
8. Qi deficiency, add Astragalus Huang Qi
9. Heat in the Blood, add Scophularuia Xuan Shen and Paeonia Mu Dan Pi
10. Constipation add Rhubarb (Da Huang) and Mirabilite (Mang Xiao)
