Botanical name:

Trachycarpus fortunei

Parts used:

1. Dried fibers from sheath of the leaves
2. Aged Fiber (Chen Zong Lu)
3. Fruit (Zong Lu Zi), less commonly used

Temperature & Taste:

Neutral. Bitter, Sour

Classification:

L. Medicines which Stop Bleeding

Uses:

1. Stops Bleeding:

-Hemoptysis
-Hematemesis
-Epistaxis
-Hemafecia
-Uterine bleeding, excess Menstruation

2. Astringes Leakage:

-Diarrhea
-Leukorrhea

FRUIT (Zong Lu Zi)
1. Stops Bleeding:

-used as above

2. Settles Wind, Calms Mind:

-Hypertension
-Insomnia, Excess dreaming

Dose:

Decoction: 3–15 grams
Powder: 1–1 ½ grams
FRUIT: 6–30 grams in decoction

Preparation:

Usually used in its Charred form to stop Bleeding

Main Combinations:

1. Uterine bleeding, excess Menstruation:
i. it can be used alone for these conditions
ii. from Blood heat, Trachycarpus Zong Lu Pi with Platycladus Ce Bai Ye
iii. with Blood Stasis, Trachycarpus Zong Lu Pi with Notoginseng San Qi, Typha pollen (Pu Huang)
2. Chronic Bleeding from Blood deficiency, Trachycarpus Zong Lu Pi with Asatragalus Huang Qi, Cornus Shan Zhu Yu
3. Blood nose:
i. the burnt powder can be blown into the nose or used as a snuff
4. Diarrhea:
i. a spoonful of the charred powder can be taken in water
ii. Trachycarpus Zong Lu Pi with Galls (Wu Bei Zi)

Major Formulas:

Gu Chong Tang

Cautions:

1. Not used for Blood in the Stool from Heat or Damp-Heat
2. If there is Bleeding with signs of Blood stasis, it must be used with Blood-moving medicines.
