Preparation:

Powder
Today in modern Hospitals in China, often the first 2 ingredients are decocted (Typhonium 4 ½–6 grams, White Silkworm 4 ½–10 grams), then 1–2 grams of Scorpion powder is taken with the decoction.

Function:

Expels Wind, Clears Phlegm, Stops Spasm
This is used for Wind attacking the Channels of the Face

Use:

For most of the following indications, it is most effective when used for recent, sudden onset.
1. Facial Paralysis (sudden, with deviation of the eyes and mouth)
2. Bell’s Palsy
3. Facial Numbness
4. twitching, cramping, or spasms of the face, mouth or eye
5. facial asymmetry or speech distortion following a stroke
6. Trigeminal Neuralgia
7. Migraine headache
8. Hemiplegia

Dose:

The powder is taken in doses of 3 grams, 2–3 times daily with yellow rice wine.

Cautions:

1. Toxic in overdose. Begin with a lower dose increasing as needed. Avoid long-term use.
2. Not used during Pregnancy
3. Not for Liver Wind-Heat / Liver Yang rising conditions.
4. Not used for acute stroke with cerebral haemorrhage.

Modifications:

1. Acute Bell’s Palsy, take with Jing Fang Bai Du San
2. Also for acute Bell’s Palsy, add Saposhnikovia (Fang Feng) 9 grams and Cicada Slough (Chan Tui) 6 grams. 
3. Chronic cases with Qi and Blood deficiency, take with Bu Zhong Yi Qi Tang, or add Astragalus Huang Qi and Dang Gui.
4. Severe Facial Spasms or Intense Pain: Add Uncaria (Gou Teng), Gastrodia (Tian Ma), and White Peony (Bai Shao)
5. To more potently open the channels to remove obstruction of Qi and Blood, add Earthworm (Di Long)
