TRADITIONAL INTERNAL MEDICINE – DISEASES & FORMULAS
Prolapse
A Prolapse is a the falling of a body part or organ from its normal place, usually due to loss of tone of the muscles and soft tissues supporting the part. The main type dealt with here is Pelvic Organ Prolapse where the Uterus, Intestines or Bladder fall from the natural place.
This usually occurs in middle age or older and is generally as a result of lack of tone in the lower abdomen (Core muscles). This is usually related to lack of exercise as well as Qi or Yang deficiency, or an excess of Damp or Fluid in the lower abdomen.
While herbal medicine can help, it is difficult to treat in chronic cases. Furthermore, Pelvic Floor exercises and core-strengthening exercise are essential. Lower abdomen massage, and Cupping, especially on the Umbilicus are useful adjuncts to treatment.
Other Prolapses include Mitrial Valve Prolapse (see Heart Disease), and Intervertebral Disc Prolapse (Slipped Disc), dealt with under Back Pain.
