Preparation:

Nux Vomica must be prepared according to Traditional methods. Generally, it is soaked in water, then peeled, then cut into small pieces and stir-fried with Sesame oil. There are various other methods that may be used; See Nux Vomica.
Decoction. The herbs are coarsely powdered, then a specified amount is decocted down to half and taken.

Function:

Regulates Qi, Stops Wind, Moves Blood, Eases Pain

Use:

“this medicine helps especially well with the disease khrag-rlung-stod-‘tshangs [sudden rise in blood pressure]”. (Men Tsee Kang)
1. Severe stabbing pain in the upper body
2. Difficulty Breathing, Shortness of Breath, Cardiac Asthma
3. Shortness of breath accompanied by stabbing pain
4. Hypertension; Sudden rise in Blood Pressure, Hypertensive crisis
5. “Immature fever due to Hypertension”

Dose:

A small dose is taken of the decoction twice daily.
The formula contains just under 10% purified Nux Vomica. Therefore if 5 grams is decocted, the amount of Nux Vomica in decoction would be less than 500mg, of which a lower amount would be available due to decoction denaturing alkaloids, and the incomplete dissolution during decoction. Five grams could be decocted to be divided into 3 equal doses, with an increase as needed once dose is established.

Cautions:

1. Not used during Pregnancy
2. Avoid overdose

Modifications:

Similar Formula:

This is the basis for Nux Vomica 13 (Ko byi bcu gsum)
