Diseases of the Throat
The Throat is easily affected in acute conditions as it is a first line of attack when an acute disease affects the surface of the body and begins to penetrate the interior. An itchy or acute sore throat indicates a pathogen is working its way into the body (airways) and may penetrate to the Lungs. In acute cases, Wind-Heat or Wind-Cold may irritate the Throat, or Heat-Toxin will cause severe sore throat with swelling and pain. Chronic cases will be associated with deficiency.
Ayurveda has the Kanthya group of Drugs, those that improve Voice and cure Hoarseness:
Asclepias pseudosarsa, Saccharum officinarum root, Licorice, Long Pepper, Raisin, Convolvulus panniculatus, Myrica sapida, Hydrocotyle asciatica, Solanum indicum, Solanum xanthocarpum

Throat Inflammation, Tonsillitis
Traditionally called Quinsy (which specifically can also mean an abscess of the Tonsils)
Bloodletting was always used first (unless there is not heat or excess); Veins under the Tongue or in the arm Wet Cupping applied between the shoulder blades is very good.
Often a purge was given, especially Pills of Cochia.
Fasting is beneficial, or the diet should be very light.
Infusion of Sage (as a gargle)
Self Heal or Hyssop boiled in Vinegar as a gargle.
Syrup of Mulberries (Diamoron) (as a gargle)
Take Hydromel or Oxymel.
Boil Hyssop in Olive oil and wet a woollen cloth in it and wrap around the neck.

Abscess of the Throat (Quinsy)
This usually appears following severe tonsillitis
1. Self Heal or Hyssop boiled in Vinegar as a gargle.
2. Celandine (root) boiled in wine and gargled.
3. Oxymel (as a gargle)
4. Vervain stamped into a plaster and applied externally heals it.
5. “mark well the place of the apostume [abscess] and prick it with a sharp stick, there is nothing of like efficacy, for many Authors have oftentimes proved the same”. (The Treasury of Health, 1550)

MIXTURE FOR LOSS OF VOICE
Steep Figs and Oregano in water, strain, and add enough Gum Arabic to make it as thick as Honey. Take some morning and evening.
A STRONG MEDICINE:
Oil of Blue Vitriol, 2 or 3 drops in white wine gargled regularly. (The Secrets of Alexis, 1595)

POWDER FOR SORE THROAT
Roch Alum 2 oz.
Cuttlebone
Sandy Sponge 1 oz. ea.
Calcine in an unglazed pot in an oven after the bread has come out. Put a little of this powder on the Tongue and directly onto the inflamed throat or tonsils. Drink some brandy in the morning. Continue 12–15 days. (Lemery)

White Pepper 45 in number
Dates 5 drams
Beat the Dates with Must to a paste, add the rest in powder and form pills the size of beans.
Used for Sore Throat, Hoarseness, Loss of Voice. Hold a pill under the tongue and suck, or take 1 dram in a infusion of Licorice. (Syrian “Book of Medicine“, trans. by Wallis Budge, 1913)
LOSS OF VOICE FROM HEAT
Gum Arabic

Cucumber seed 1 dram each
Licorice juice
Starch 2 drams each
Make pills with Must and hold under the tongue.
HUKSY VOICE FROM COLD AND DAMP
Pepper 1 dram
Burnt Mustard seed 3 drams
Make into Honey pills and hold under the tongue.
