Huang Lian (Coptis) (Ginger-fried)

Coptis chinensis

60 grams

Mu Xiang (Costus)

Saussurea costus

30 grams

Chen Xiang (Aloeswood)

Aquilaria sinensis

30 grams

* Ban Xia is fermented by mixing with Ginger juice and Bamboo juice.

Preparation:

Powder and form Pills.

Function:

Clears Heat, Resolves Phlegm

Use:

Sensation of fullness, oppression, or a painful binding restriction across the chest and upper abdominal walls
1. Severe, nagging cough with thick, stubborn, yellow or gray-white sputum that is difficult to expectorate
2. Acid reflux, chronic bitter regurgitation
3. irritability or insomnia caused by turbid Phlegm-Heat

Dose:

3 grams taken with Ginger tea

Cautions:

1. Only used for Phlegm-Fire (Phlegm-Heat) conditions
2. Not used in Yin deficiency
3. Not used for Cold Stomach or Spleen Yang deficiency
4. Not used during Pregnancy. (It has been used very cautiously)

Modifications:

1. Add Gua Lou (Trichosanthes fruit) to dissolve thick, yellow, stubborn Phlegm from the Chest
2. If there is excess Heat, increase the dose of Coptis and add Scutellaria Huang Qin.
3. For Fire (severe Heat) with Fever and Thirst, add Gypsum (Shi Gao)
4. If there is Heat clumping with dry stool and yellow urine, add Rhubarb (Da Huang)
5. For Wheezing or barking Cough, add Xing Ren (Apricot kernel) and Su Zi (Perilla seed).
6. Chronic Cough with Yellow Phlegm, add Sang Bai Pi (Mulberry root bark.
7. Nausea, add Citrus Chen Pi>
8. Phlegm obstruction with Food Stagnation, add Radish seed (Lai Fu Zi).
9. If there is restlessness or irritability from Phlegm obstructing the Orifices, add Polygala Yuan Zhi and Calamus (Shi Chang Pu).
