Botanical name:

Caragana spp.

  1. C. jubata (syn. Astragalus jubata, Aspalathus jubatus, Robinia jubata) (Primary source)
  2. C. gerardiana (Gerard’s Peashrub)
  3. C. tibetica (Tibetan Peashrub)
  4. C. changduensis (Changdu Peashrub)
  5. C. franchetiana (Franchet’s Peashrub)
  6. C. pygmaea (Pygmy Peashrub)
  7. C. brevifolia (Shortleaf Peashrub)
  8. C. erinacea (Hedgehog Peashrub)

Despite the fact that the above species are synonymous in effect, according to some Tibetan sources, different species are preferred for different parts:

  1. Mdzo mo shing (Heartwood)–C. jubata (primary source); also C. tibetica
  2. Gra ma (whole plant)–C. jubata (primary source); also C. gerardiana
  3. Gra ma’i rtsa ba (Caragana root)–C. pygmaea, and local varieties including C. microphylla
  4. Bra ma’i me tog (Caragana flower)–C. erinacea, C. brevifolia, C. pygmaea

Parts used:

Red Heartwood (Tibet)
Root, Branches (and leaf) (TCM)

Temperature & Taste:

Cool, dry. Sweet, Salty, slightly Bitter

Uses:

1. Clears Heat, Resolves Toxin:

–Cysts, Abscesses (Tibet)
–Breast Abscess, Toxic Sores, Boils, Abscess (TCM)
–used for Blood-Heat disorders
–Cough

2. Moves the Blood:

–enhances Blood circulation (Tibet)
–Amenorrhea, Dysmenorrhea
–Irregular and abnormal Menstruation (Tibet)
–Headaches
–Joint and Muscles Pain (Tibet)
–Rheumatic Arthritis
–Polycythemia

3. Calms the Liver, Settles Wind:

–Hypertension (TCM)
–atherosclerosis, hyperlipidemia

Dose:

2–3 grams

Substitute:

1. Red Sandalwood.
2. Caesalpina sappa (used in Mongolia)

Main Combinations:

1. To clear Heat and Toxin from the Blood, Caragana, Chebulic Myrobalan, Sarsaparilla, Frankincense

Major Formulas:

Caragana 6 Decoction (Mdzo mo drug thang)
Licorice 7 Decoction (Shing mngar bdun thang)
