TRADITIONAL INTERNAL MEDICINE – DISEASES & FORMULAS

Bleeding

Bleeding can be caused by Trauma, ruopture of Blood vessel, Ulcers, abrasions, chronic inflammation etc. Bleeding may also occur during Fevers.

In Traditional Medicine it is important to differentiate between Heat-type and Cold-type Bleeding.

  • Heat-type Bleeding: Bleeding with Fever, red face, red tongue, big or fast pulse. The person feels hot, the blood is brighter in color, and there maybe other signs of heat such as strong colored urine, constipation or insomnia and restlessness.
  • Cold-type Bleeding: pale face, feels cold, pale tongue, low pulse. The bleeding tends to be more moderate and the blood is more pale or waterish. The person will be cold to the touch, maybe with pale, copious urine.

In TCM the Spleen is regarded as controlling the Blood, and therefore Bleeding with deficiency may be treated with medicines to strengthen the Qi.

Common clinical Bleeding conditions in moderen clinical practice are associated with female Menstruation and Pregnancy, such as excessive menstruation, spotting, flooding, uterine bleeding, bleeding during pregnancy etc. These conditions have special formulas dedicated to them.

Bleeding is also commonly associated with Trauma. Even mild Trauma causing some internal damage and bleeding. In these cases medicines to stop bleeding may be intitally used, followed by medicines to resolve Blood stagnation. The same approach is used in Apoplexy.
