Gardenia jasminoides

9–15 grams

Huang Bai (Phellodendron)

Phellodendron chinense

6 grams

Zhi Gan Cao (Fried Licorice)

Glycyrrhiza uralensis

3 grams

Preparation:

Decoction
Traditionally, Gardenia Zhi Zi is boiled in 4 cups of water down to 2 ½ cups, then the other ingredients are added and boiled down to 1 ½ cups. Today, it is prepared as a standard decoction, all herbs being boiled together.

Function:

Clears Damp-Heat, Resolves Jaundice

Use:

1. Jaundice, with signs of Damp-Heat, Fever and bright yellow skin and eyes.

Dose:

The above is taken in 3 equal doses over the course of the day.

Cautions:

Not used for Cold-Damp Jaundice

Modifications:

1. For Jaundice, it is stronger if Artemisia Yin Chen Hao is added.
2. If there is excess and constipation, add Rhubarb (Da Huang)
