Varicose Veins
Varicose Veins are swollen, twisted and distended veins, usually in the lower body. It is a disease caused by improper venous supply which causes pooling of blood which distends the veins.
Causes:
Of course the ultimate cause is generally Gravity (putting more pressure on the lower body) and Age (which leads to dysfunction of the venous system).
A primary pathology leading to Varicose Veins is leaky valves within the veins. The following Risk Factors also play a major role.
Risk factors include:
- Age
- Pregnancy
- Genetic Factors
- obesity
- Prolonged standing
Treatment:
1. Exercise, Inversions / elevating legs. “Riding a bicycle upside down”, meaning lying on the back, lifting the hips in the air and cycling your legs. This down before bed greatly helps alleviate the venous distention.
2. Bloodletting and Wet Cupping are very useful, starting with small veins around the ankles.
3. Leeching is also very effective
4. Herbal medicine can be very useful in combionation which lifestyle changes. Medicines focusing on thinning the blood and promoting circulation are most used.
5. Western Intervention involving Sclerotherapy, Laser therapy, Radiofrequency Ablation, and Surgery in severe cases.
Dietary advice may be required. For example, reducing food intake if overweight, avoiding foods hard to digest, and taking drinks which promote good circulation such as Ginger tea or Rosemary Wine.

1. Vinegar-tincture of Calendula reportedly has cured many cases of chronic Varicose Veins with constant application for 4-6 weeks.
2. Comfrey tincture, ointment or poultice is useful for Varicose Veins and Varicose Ulcers.
3. Marshmallow decocted in wine and used topically.
4. Infused OIl of Camomile
5. As a wash for Varicose veins, Horsetail with Rosemary, Yarrow, Horse Chestnut
6. Dissolve Alum in hot water, wash the veins while hot, then add Ointment of Roses.

7. Hawthorn berry with Yarrow and Horse Chestnut
8. Hawthorn flowers, Yarrow, Calendula
9. Yarrow with St. Johns wort and Arnica flower (or Calendula) internally and topically

OINTMENT FOR VARICOSE VEINS (1)
Wax 1 ½ oz
Turpentine 3 oz.
Frankincenfe
Fenugreek
Mastic 2 ½ oz.
Musk 3 grains
Dissolve the Wax and Turpentine, then add ½ pound of Olive (or other) Oil, and when it begins to boil put in the Mastic, Fenugreek and Musk, mix and incorporate to an Ointment (Lemery)

Make a salve with (Deer) suet and Oil of Orris. (Wirtzung)

Zinc oxide, finely sifted (1 part), Simple Ointment (5 parts by weight)
