Angelica archangelica

1 ½ oz.

Brandy

Spiritum vini

1 lb.

Preparation:

Mix and digest a week, then strain, filter and decant.

Function:

Clears Wind-Cold, resists Poison, promotes Circulation

Use:

‘It is Cordial, opens Obstructions, and prevails against Faintings, Swooning, sickness at Heart, Palpitation, and such like: it strengthens and fortifies the Stomach, sweetens the Blood, and is good against all Tartarous Mucilage in the Lungs and Precordia, and is an excellent thing in good earnest against the Scurvy, continual Fevers, as also putrid and contagious, not excepting the Plague itself’. (Bates)

Comment:

The seed was also commended by some (including Sydenham) for acute Epidemic Coughs.
Angelica seed was also used as a female tonic, to promote Menstruation, and to increase Fertility.
