Rhododendron dauricum

Botanical name:

Rhododendron dauricum (TCM)

Parts used:

Leaf, collected Summer or Autumn

Temperature & Taste:

Warm, dry. Pungent, Bitter

Classifications:

Q. Stop Cough and Wheezing

Uses:

1. Stops Cough, Clears Cold-Phlegm:

-Cough; acute and chronic Bronchitis
-Bronchial Asthma

Dose:

Begin with lower doses and increase as needed.
R. dauricum: 50–100mg of the powder, three times daily
The essential oil of R. dauricum is used for acute and chronic Bronchitis in doses of 50–100mg (Chinese Pharmacopoeia)

Main Combinations:

1. Bronchitis:
i. combine with Licorice and Almond
ii. with Barberry root-bark and Cloves in decoction (this has been found clinically useful)

Cautions:

1. Avoid overdose.
2. Not used during Pregnancy
3. Use cautiously in the elderly, who are more prone to side effects.

Toxicity:

1. Large doses have been associated with sudden drop in Blood pressure, lowered Heart Rate and arrhythmias.

Main Preparations used:

1. Tincture of Rhododendron dahuricum leaf:
Rhododendron dahuricum leaf (60 grams), White Spirit (Vodka etc.) (500 mls.). Infuse 7 days, strain. Dose: 15–20 mls. three times daily in chronic Bronchitis.
2. Syrup of Rhododendron dahuricum leaf:
  Rhododendron dahuricum leaf (200 grams), macerate in 950mls of 40% alcohol for 7 days, stirring daily. Filter and press the residue. Al;low to settle, then filter again. Add 350 grams of sugar and heat gently to dissolve. Add Potassium sorbate (3 grams), Menthol (100mg) and stir to dissolve. Add alcohol (40%) to make 1000 mls. (Chinese Pharmacopoeia)
