Botanical name:

Primula spp.
A number of species are used in Tibetan Medicine:

  1. Shang dril smug po (Brown): P. calderiana
  2. Shang dril dkar po (White): P. reidii, P. atrodentata; Primula munroi in Nepal
  3. Shang dril ser po: (Yellow): P. sikkimensis
  4. Shang dril dmar po (Red): P. secundiflora, P. macrophylla
  5. Shang dril nag po (Black): P. macrophylla (Whole plant)
  6. Shang dril smug chung: P. calliantha (syn. P. bryophila)
  7. Shang dril smug chen: P. nussola
  8. shang dril sngon po: Primula reidii var. williamsii

Note: different sources have equated different species to each type.

Parts used:

Flower; sometimes whole plant

Temperature & Taste:

Cool, dry. Sweet

Uses:

1. Settles Wind:

-Nerve disorders in general

2. Clears Heat, Stops Cough:

-Cough, Bronchitis
-acute Sore Throat, Pharyngitis
-Lung abscess

3. Clears Heat, Resists Poison:

-all kinds of Fever
-Food Poisoning, acute Diarrhea, Dysentery
-Blood diseases

Dose:

Powder: 1–3 grams
Decoction: 2–6 grams (added at the end)

Substitute:

It is probably equivalent to the western Primrose, Primula veris
