Poppy seed

Papaver somniferum

1⁄2 oz.

Mandrake root

Mandragora officinalis

Henbane seed

Hyoscyamus niger

1⁄2 dram ea.

Saffron

Crocus sativus

4 grains

Preparation:

Beat them together, tie in a cloth and steep for 6 hours in 5 ounce of Water of Water Lillies, then press out strongly.

Function:

Clears Heat, eases Pain, promotes Sleep

Use:

Insomnia; used for Insomnia during Frenzy or with marked Heat.

Dose:

1 oz., up to 3 oz., taken 2 hours before dinner or bed.

Cautions:

This would generally not be prescribed today. It should be used with caution if it were used, and is not suitable for the young, old, weak or pregnant.

Modifications:

This is a strong medicine to promote Sleep and is one of the few medicines where Mandrake is prescribed internally. It is a symptomatic medicine, used only in severe cases to promote Rest and Sleep. The underlying condition must be treated.
