Botanical name:

Nelumbo nucifera

Parts used:

Plumule

Temperature & Taste:

Cold, dry. Bitter

Uses:

1. Clears Heart Fire:

-High fever with confusion, delirium, insomnia, irritability

2. Clears Heat, Stops Bleeding:

-Vomiting of Blood

3. Astringes the Kidneys:

-Spermatorrhea

Dose:

Decoction: 1.5–3 grams (up to 10 grams maximum)

Substitutes:

Lotus and Water Lily are very similar in use. In general the corresponding part of each plant can be used as a substitute. 

Main Combinations:

1. High Fever, thirst, delirium Lotus Plumule Lian Zi Xin with Scrophularia Xuan Shen, Ophiopogon Mai Men Dong
2. Irritability, Lotus Plumule Lian Zi Xin with Gardenia Zhi Zi
3. Bleeding from Heat, Lotus Plumule Lian Zi Xin with Rehmannia Sheng Di Huang, Imperata Bai Mao Gen
4. Spermatorrhea, Lotus Plumule Lian Zi Xin with Chinese Rosehip (Jin Ying Zi), Astragalus Semen Sha Yuan Zi

Cautions:

Not used in Coldness and deficiency.
