Several types were known including Dentalium and Entalium

Uses:
1. Clears Stomach Heat, Clears Acid:
-Heartburn, Stomach Pain, Bloody Diarrhea etc.
-“They are an alkali and suitable for neutralizing acidity, inhibiting leakage and hemorrhage when used internally”. (Lemery)
2. Clears Heat, Stops Fever:
-used for Burning Fevers,
3. Clears Stones:
-some regarded them as useful for Stones.
Dose:
Of the finely levigated Powder: 500mg–2 grams
Comment:
“Even though the forces of nature are the same for other mussels, In fever and in stone, they make some rich”. (Parnassus Medicinalis, Joachim, 1658)
Substitutes:
1. Renodeus said it has the same functions as Umbilical Stone.
2. Oyster (or other similar) shells.
Preparation:
It is finely levigated with water to form a fine powder.
Main Combinations:
It was usually only used in Citrine Ointment.

From Salmon, Seplasium:
Salmon describes several types and tells of how some authors supposed them to be teeth from certain fish or animals.
They are rarely used, excepting as an ingredient in the Citrine Ointment, and have similar virtue to Crabs-Eyes, Crab Shell, Oyster shells etc. which may be used in their place.
They cool, dry and absorb acid. Taken in doses of 1–2 drams of the fine powder, for Heartburn and Burning Stomach pain. They may be taken for Burning Fevers and for Diarrhea and Dysentery.
