Zhi Gan Cao (Fried Licorice)

Glycyrrhiza uralensis

6 grams

Preparation:

Decoction. Aconite is boiled for 45 minutes before adding the Licorice and Ephedra.
NOTE: In the original Shanghan Lun text, the ratio is Ma Huang (2 liang), Zhi Gan Cao (2 liang), and Pao Fu Zi (1 piece). In modern clinical practice, the ratio translates to roughly 2:2:3 or equal parts depending on the severity of the internal Yang deficiency

Function:

Warms the Yang, Clears Cold

Use:

Warms the interior Yang while releasing the exterior Cold.
Specifically for simultaneous Tai Yang (exterior) and Shao Yin (interior) pattern in people with pre-existing Yang deficiency
1. acute Cold or Influenza with pre-existing Yang deficiency
2. Severe, sharp joint pain, lower back pain, or sciatica that’s better with heat and worse with exposure to cold
3. Allergic Rhinitis
4. Chronic Asthma

Dose:

The above is taken in 2 equal doses per day.

Cautions:

1. Not used in Heat conditions
2. Not used in Yin Deficiency
3. Caution due to Aconite. It must be prepared properly and decocted for at least 45 minutes before adding other herbs. Ephedra is also restricted in some countries.
