Lapis Limacis, Lapis Celonites, Snail and Slug Stone

Stone from the Heads of Slugs and Snails.

Lapis Limacis

Cochlites – a type of ‘Lapis Limacis’

Aldrovani, Musaeum Metallicum, 1648

Small, white, oval stones taken from the Heads of Snails and Slugs were called Lapis Celonites and Lapis Limacis respectively;  they were usually regarded as synonymous, the term Lapis Limacis usually being used for either; Limacis is Latin for both Slug and Snail.

They were primarily used to clear Heat in Fevers. They were also apparently held under the tongue for Divination.

Cochlites, regarded as similar to Lapis Limacis, are thought to be fossil shells with a mouth like a snail.

See Fossil Shells.
