Angelica sinensis

Tian Hua Fen (Trichosanthes root)

Trichosanthes kirilowii

Chai Hu (Bupleurum)

Bupleurum chinense

15 grams

Gan Cao (Licorice)

Glycyrrhiza uralensis

6 grams

* Pangolian scales are roasted before use; today they are omitted as they are endangered

Preparation:

Prepare a coarse powder to be made into a draft (see below)
Today it is prepared as a standard decoction

Function:

Moves the Blood, clears Stasis, opens Channels

Use:

1. Trauma, Bruising, with severe pain
2. Strains, Sprains
3. Injuries of muscles, joints or soft tissue with severe pain
4. Fractures
5. Concussion
6. Hyperplasia of the Breasts
7. Adhesions of the abdominal organs

Dose:

Use 30 grams of the coarse powder to make a draft with 3 parts water, 1 part wine. Take warm.
It is discontinued once severe pain is alleviated.

Cautions:

1. Not used during Pregnancy
2. Generally not used in severe deficiency or Spleen weakness (in which case it may cause diarrhea)
3. Not used long-term

Modifications:

1. More severe pain, add Corydalis Yan Hu Suo
2. Also for more severe pain, add Corydalis Yan Hu Suo, Frankincense (Ru Xiang), Myrrh (Mo Yao), Notoginseng San Qi
3. Qi stagnation, add Costus (Mu Xiang) and Cyperus rotundus (Xiang Fu)
4. More severe Blood stagnation, add Myrrh (Mo Yao) and Frankincense (Ru Xiang)
5. Back pain, add Cinnamon twig (Gui Zhi)
6. Chest pain from Trauma, add Curcuma Yu Jin, Frankincense (Ru Xiang), Corydalis Yan Hu Suo
7. Trauma to the lower back, add Eucommia Du Zhong and Achyranthes Niu Xi
8. Concussion, add Calamus (Shi Chang Pu), Ligusticum Chuan Xiong
9. Fractures, take with Qi Li San
10. Adhesions, add Zedoary (E Zhu) and Costus (Mu Xiang)
