TRADITIONAL INTERNAL MEDICINE – DISEASES & FORMULAS
Diseases of the Mouth, Gums and Teeth

Neue Artznei und Practicierbuchlin, Bock, 1551
The Mouth and Teeth are prone to inflammation, infections and Ulcers. In particular, chronic Gum disease and Dental problems were a great problem in the past due to general lack of health and cleanliness of the Teeth, especially by lower classes. However, many traditional texts stressed the importance of cleaning between the teeth after food and Tooth Powders have long been used in the West to cleanse and polish the Teeth.
Many cultures have the tradition of cleansing or picking the teeth with a twig picked from a certain tree. In India the Neem tree is used. A stick is picked, chewed a little to fray the end which is used to clean the teeth. The leaves, bark or twigs of the Bay tree were used similarly in Europe. Often the tree chosen will have useful antibacterial properties.
Before taking food, they should brush their teeth with a stick obtained from
specific plants whose aroma counters the bad taste in their mouth and
helps them relish their food—using a stick, the mouth will feel fresh, the
appetite will be whetted, and they will be able to appreciate the taste of
their food. After having thus brushed teeth, they should rinse thei mouth
several times with thin buttermilk, sugarcane juice, or an alcoholic drink,
along with an appropriate diet. (Charaka)

The Myth of the Tooth Worms
In many old texts, there are references to “Worms” being the cause of various ailments, one of the common ones being Toothache, but also sometimes even associated with diseases such as Cancer, for example.
In some instances, it was stated that the Physician and bystanders viewed Worms come out, and afterward, the disease was cured. One example was recoreded by Hartman, A Collection of Choice Recipes (1682):
“An infallible and much experienced Remedy to cure the Toothache. and to fetch our the Worms that are in the Gums and Hollow Tooth. Take Henbane Seeds well bruised, two spoonfuls, Bees Wax four ounces: shred the Wax, and make it soft in warm water; then mix the seed well with it, and make a Candle thereof with Cotton Thred, hold the Candle being lighted in your Mouth, letting the Heat and smoke of it go into your Mouth as much as may be endured; and hold your Mouth over a bringer full of Water, and the Candle. will draw out the Worms, and they will fall with the Rheum into the Water, so that you shall see some of them alive.
This hath been sufficiently experimented.
You may also put the end of a Funnel to the tooth, and so hold the Candle in the Funnel, holding your Mouth over the Water”.
