What’s the Difference between the Ayurvedic and TCM Herb Classification?
Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) classifies herbs by their energetic temperatures, tastes, and channel tropism (meridian targets), while Ayurveda classifies them by their elemental qualities (mahabhutas), tastes (rasas), physiological actions (virya and vipaka), and effect on the three body Doshas (vata, pitta, kapha). Despite appearing different from the outset, the fundamental theoretical approach and reasoning is really very similar.
Basic Overview
Core Classifications in TCM
- Four Natures (Temperature): Herbs are categorized as hot, warm, cool, or cold to counteract imbalances in body temperature or metabolic speed.
- Five Flavors (Taste): Pungent, sweet, sour, bitter, and salty determine the specific physiological direction and function of an herb (e.g., bitter drains heat and dries dampness).
- Meridian Tropism (Channels): Herbs are mapped to specific organ meridians (such as the Liver, Heart, or Lung channels) to direct healing properties straight to that system.
- Functional Categories: Grouped by clinical action, such as “Tonify Qi”, “Release Exterior,” or “Clear Heat.”
Core Classifications in Ayurveda
- Five Elements (Panchamahabhutas): Herbs are viewed as combinations of space, air, fire, water, and earth.
- Six Tastes (Rasas): Sweet, sour, salty, pungent, bitter, and astringent. Each taste influences the doshas based on its constituent elements.
- Potency (Virya): The inherent active energy of the herb, divided primarily into heating (ushna) or cooling (sheeta).
- Post-Digestive Effect (Vipaka): How the herb transforms and affects the body after complete digestion (sweet, sour, or pungent).
- Dosha Effect (Prabhava/Karma): The specific capability of the herb to pacify or aggravate vata, pitta, or kapha.
Despite originating thousands of miles apart, Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and Ayurveda share a profoundly identical philosophy: they treat the human body as a microcosm of nature. Both systems reject the idea of disease as an isolated event, choosing instead to classify herbs based on how they alter the body’s internal environment and energetic ecosystem.
The profound structural similarities between their herbal classification systems reveal a shared understanding of human biology.
Core Similarities
1. The Core Philosophy of Energetics
Both systems use energetic profiles to determine how an herb interacts with a living system.
- The Goal: Both systems use herbs to restore homeostatic balance. If a person has a “cold” or “sluggish” condition, both systems prescribe “heating” herbs.
- The Living Energy: TCM centers around Qi (vital life force) and the balance of Yin and Yang. Ayurveda centers around Prana (life force) and the balance of the three Doshas (Vata, Pitta, Kapha). In both systems, herbs are classified by how they alter, move, or replenish these specific forces.
2. Taste as a Therapeutic Tool
The most striking structural similarity is that both systems rely on taste to predict an herb’s physiological action in the body. They believe flavor is not an accidental trait, but a direct indicator of medicinal power.

- TCM’s Four Natures: Herbs are categorized as Cold, Cool, Warm, or Hot.
- Ayurveda’s Virya: Herbs are primarily categorized by their thermal potency into Sheeta (Cooling) or Ushna (Heating).
A cooling herb in TCM (like Mint/Bo He) is almost universally categorized as cooling (Sheeta) in Ayurveda. They are used identically to clear “Heat” (TCM) or “Pitta” (Ayurveda). Likewise a warming herb in TCM (like Ginger/Gan Jiang) is almost universally categorized as heating (Ushna) in Ayurveda.
All systems will tend to have occasional differences in the classification of a medicines temperature. Even within a singular system a medicine can have differing opinions between different authors at different times. But the remarkable consistency overall shows a clear practical usage of this way of categorising a medicine for clinical use.
4. Macrocosm to Microcosm (The Elemental Framework)
Both traditions classify herbs according to how they embody the primordial elements of the universe.
- Ayurveda relies on the Five Elements (Panchamahabhutas): Earth, Water, Fire, Air, and Space. The elements dictate the taste and action of the herb (e.g., Fire + Water = Sour).
- TCM relies on the Five Elements (Wu Xing): Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water. Each element corresponds to a flavor and an organ system (e.g., Fire corresponds to the Bitter taste and the Heart).
5. Multi-Herb Formulation
Neither system relies heavily on “single-bullet” herbalism. They classify herbs by their role within a complex, synergistic formula.
- The Hierarchy: TCM organizes formulas using a royal hierarchy: Emperor, Minister, Assistant, and Envoy. Ayurveda uses an incredibly similar approach, classifying herbs within a formula into primary active herbs, synergistic catalysts (Yogavahi), and antidotes to buffer side effects.
- Bioavailability Enhancers: Both traditions use specific herbs purely to guide the formula to a destination or increase absorption (e.g., TCM uses Licorice root as a harmonizer; Ayurveda uses Ginger, Black Pepper, or Ghee as carriers/bio-enhancers).
Specific Examples
1. Pearl
Zhen Zhu (TCM): Mukta (Ayurveda)
Both traditions classify pearl as a rare, highly cooling substance. They use it for the exact same purpose: to calm a hyperactive, overheated nervous system and soothe the mind.

The Shared Logic: In TCM, emotional agitation, insomnia, and palpitations are often caused by “Liver Fire” or “Deficient Heart Yin” causing the spirit to float. In Ayurveda, this same state is described as excess Pitta (fire) aggravating the mind. Both systems classify Pearl as heavily cooling and heavy in nature to “anchor” that erratic, hot energy
2. Licorice Root
Gan Cao (TCM): Yashtimadhu (Ayurveda)
Licorice is the ultimate cross-cultural “harmonizer”. Both systems classify it as a heavy, sweet tonic root and use it as a guiding or buffering agent in multi-herb formulas.

Shared Logic: Both traditions recognize the sweet taste as building and restorative. TCM uses Licorice to build Spleen Qi (digestive energy), while Ayurveda uses it to build Rasa (plasma and fluids). Furthermore, because it is gentle and sweet, both systems use it to coat the stomach and prevent harsher herbs in a formula from causing irritation
3. Costus Root
Mu Xiang (TCM): Kushtha (Ayurveda)
Costus (Saussurea costus) is a highly aromatic, pungent root native to the Himalayas. Both systems classify it as a sharp, moving herb designed to break up physical and energetic stagnation in the digestive tract.

The Shared Logic: When digestion gets sluggish, TCM calls it Qi Stagnation, resulting in pain, bloating, and gas. Ayurveda attributes these exact same symptoms to trapped Vata (air/wind). Because Costus is classified as warm and pungent, both systems utilize its volatile oils to physically stimulate the digestive system, move trapped gas, and eliminate abdominal cramping
Conclusion
As with other aspects of Traditional Medicine, from the outside looking in, the framework for understanding a medicine can appear quite different if we compare TCM and Ayurveda. However, you don’t need to look very hard to see that, in essence, they are remarkably similar. In fact, it is the fundamental similarity in the way of thinking about medicines, health and disease that has allowed countless physicians throughout history to embrace and learn from other traditions.
The very fact that there has been a deep sharing of medical theory and materia medica over the past several millennia indeed shows that the ancient masters were able to see through the apparent initial differences to see the underlying consistencies.
