TRADITIONAL INTERNAL MEDICINE – DISEASES & FORMULAS
To Promote Birth

The perils associated with Childbirth have long been known. From early times it was noticed that prolonged labor was dangerous for both mother and baby. Therefore, various medicines have been used to accelerate Birth, and in some cases, even initiate Labor.
In general, medicines to Warm the Kidneys and move the Blood are combined to promote Labor. But as always, the nature of the Mother needs to be taken into account. A mother with a hot nature and a strong pulse usually won’t require very heating medicines, for example.
The primary medicines used to promote Labor are:
- Medicines that Warm the Kidneys and Uterus: Cinnamon, Parsley, Leek
- Medicines that Move the Blood: Myrrh, Frankincense, Saffron, Pennyroyal, Amber
- Aromatics that strongly move Qi and Blood: Musk
Many of the medicines used to promote Labor are contraindicated for use during Pregnancy due to their effect on stimulating the Uterus.
During Labor, keeping the strength up with suitable broths or soups, and eating poached eggs to keep strength up is useful. It is also good to apply Almond oil to the pubis and vagina before and during labor.
“Heed is likewise to be taken that the woman carry no Precious Stones about her, either in Rings or otherwise, but let her lay them all away: for many of them are conceived by a peculiar property to retain the Child in the Womb”. (The Practice of Physick, 1663)

Case History
“I was once with Sr. Kenelm Digby in his Chamber, when a Midwife came to him and told him that a woman had been in labour three days, and that she could not be delivered though the Child was nigh pitched, and having heard that Sir. Kenelm had a powder that would facilitate the Birth, she prayed him to give her a little of it. Sr. Kenelm went into his closet and brought out a little powder in a paper, and gave it her desiring her to give it to the woman in a little burnt Clarret, and an hour after she had taken it to send him word how she did. And within less than an hour she sent to thank him, and that she was delivered of a lusty boy within half an hour after taking it. Upon that I asked Sir. Kenelm whether it was a Chymical preparation, and-he told me it was nothing but a dram of Myrrh in subtle powder,” (Hartman)
