Preparation:
Powder finely and form pills with water or honey.
Function:
Transforms Phlegm, opens the Orifices, and clears the Heart
Use:
Used for “Phlegm Misting the Heart” with stifling sensation in the chest and a thick, sound of phlegm gurgling in the chest, and a greasy tongue-coat.
1. Epilepsy
2. Sudden Mania
3. Severe Depression
4. Bipolar patterns
5. Manic Depression
6. Schizophrenia and Psychotic Disorders
7. Severe Anxiety and Panic Attacks
8. Emotional constraint causing mental illness
9. Post-Stroke Disorders (Wind-Phlegm)
Dose:
Taken with warm water, Ginger tea, or rice water.
Today, capsules are often taken with Ginger juice (or Ginger decoction) to prevent stomach irritation.
Cautions:
1. Contraindicated in Pregnancy
Modifications:
1. To help help open the orifices of the mind and clear Phlegm, add Calamus (Shi Chang Pu)
2. Severe Qi Stagnation and Emotional constraint add Ligusticum Chuan Xiong and Cyperus Xiang Fu
3. Severe Manic Episodes from Phlegm-Fire add Bile-Prepared Arisaema (Dan Nan Xing) or Chlorite Schist (Meng Shi)
4. Severe Heart Fire add Coptis Huang Lian
